My first stop on the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is at the Visitor Center. It sits on the edge of Rynearson Pool No. I, a water management impoundment constructed in 1936. Occasionally, Rynearson Pools No. I and No. 2 are drawn down, to expose mudflats and provide a buffet of fresh vegetation and invertebrates for more than 245 bird species and the several species of mammals that frequent the refuge.

I make the center my first stop so that I can hike the Observation Tower Trail, just to the east of the building. A little under a mile, the looping trail meanders through woods and wetlands. Halfway through, I find an open-air blind and sit down to soak in the sounds, smells, and sights of a September day in Wisconsin. Within minutes, from somewhere in the nearby reeds, I hear the throaty, rattle-like utterances of sandhill cranes.

Once at the tower, I climb its two stories. I’m awed by the number of water bodies spread out below me as far as I can see, way too many to count. In fact, there are more than thirteen thousand acres of wetlands on the refuge property. This is a waterfowl’s paradise.
